He didn't have any actual statistics to back that statement up, and only partly because he didn't have a frame of reference for what would happen if they were separated. Certainly he had a few past experiences to draw from, but the situations were dissimilar enough -mostly due to the 'we might still be dead' factor- that they would make for a flawed prediction and he hated being wrong even more than he sometimes hated being right.
