"Ben -" Hannah calls after him but lets him leave, watching him disappear with a sigh. Maybe he's going to go check on the girl after all.
Hannah hadn't really expected a warm and tender early family reunion, but she''d expected more than that. She lets the silence hang in the room for a few long beats, still trying to get a grasp on what's just happened. Even more that she had before, she wishes Luke was at her side instead of just a voice on the other end of the comm.
"He walked off," she explains, though she imagines Luke may have started suspect that based on the deafening silence. "Our kids are not how I remember them." It's a half-hearted attempt at a joke but there's a lot of truth to it. Hannah feels entirely unprepared to deal with everything that's unfolding. "Should I go after him? Should I check on Jane?" Or should she just leave the kids alone? They don't always see eye to eye on parenting issues but she's going to defer to him on this one.
Jane honestly wonders how Luke intends to manage her and Ben's presence in the base; those who'd been around when she arrived with Jon had definitely looked like they'd seen a ghost, since most of Command had known her as a young girl. Is he going to play up that story and use it to boost the troops' morale even further? She can almost hear the story now: little Janey, Jedi Knight, had been alive all this time, helping the Resistance from the shadows. And while she doesn't like the thought of having to slip into that persona, to carry the burden of being the hope of some cause... she knows what it's like to be desperate enough to do anything to survive, and she can't begrudge her father that.
She groans when Jon mentions punching Ben, though, because if she could prevent them from having to meet face to face at all, she would. Kriff, at this rate she might have to stalk off the ship first thing and make out with him in front of everyone or something, if only to distract him from outright attacking her brother.
"Don't waste your breath on him." Her voice is strained, giving her unease away. "And refueling sounds like a good excuse. I'll see you in a bit, then."
--
The silence seems to stretch on for eons.
Luke sighs, slumping back against his seat and pinching the bridge of his nose. Yeah, that went well. And he'd argue that Hannah's wrong, because it's still a lot like the old days, really -- he and Hannah fumbling with what to say, Ben walking out on them. But he doesn't have the energy or interest to antagonize his wife right now, purposely or otherwise. They're in this together.
He glances behind him at Hannah's question. "I think Jane's occupied at the moment," he hints, catching Jon in the middle of a serious conversation with someone over his comm. The two have always been close, going all the way back to their time in the academy, and they've only become inseparable in the years that passed. Luke might have not seen their daughter in six years, but that he could easily tell. "Just... hurry back, Hannah. We can deal with them together here."
His expression softens. "Are you okay?" It's probably a stupid question.
--
Both Rey and Finn stiffen when they see Ben coming up through the corridor; Finn even steps protectively in front of Rey, though everything in him clearly wants to bolt and run. Because, man, Kylo Ren. He doesn't trust Ben to not murder all of them in the end anyway.
Rey, though, gives Ben a concerned look. There's something... off. She can feel the conflict rolling off him in waves, and it's not about him debating whether he should turn on them or not. There's a lot of confusion, for one. And... pain. Old hurts, perhaps. Something to do with family...
She takes a breath, closing her eyes for a moment. Family.
"Are we needed for anything?" she asks awkwardly. Just trying to break the ice.
He can catch a small hint of that, make out with him when she gets off the ship in the Force and there's an answering 'yes please' feeling from him. But then, he's always up for making out with her. Anywhere, any time. He's just always that hungry for her, and after everything, unwilling to let time or affection slip away without being expressed. He never wants to lose another moment with her if he can help it.
Whatever she decides, whatever direction with the Resistance she wants to go, Jon will follow her too. She doesn't have to be that hope alone this time though. They're together, and he'll always be at her side.
"I love you," he offers at that unease he can hear in her voice. "And I'm here, for whatever you need. Just get here safe and soon."
He glances over at Luke briefly, he can see tension in her father from whatever conversation Luke's having on his comm. "Pretty sure your dad needs your mom back, as much as I need you back." None of this is easy on anyone.
He didn't hear Luke calling on him via the comm, the need to get out of the room too strong to have him even waiting for a brief minute. The whole ship just felt too small. Far smaller than he could ever remember the Falcon being and yes, he knew this wasn't the Falcon but it was the nearest he'd ever be allowed to his old home and...
He stopped, staring at Rey and FN-1... Finn, they call him Finn. Probably thinks he'll kill them all. Ben wonders if it would be easier, to just give in and be the evil one everyone is so insistent that he is.
His eyes dart to the girl. Rey. There's still that odd feeling. Loneliness, and pain, and want. Want of... family? Ha, he wanted his and now he's wondering if he was in the wrong about it all. He shakes his head.
"This ship is too small," he mutters. How long until they landed? Then he might be able to breathe.
oops sorry guess who forgot to keep tracking the thread
He's right. Hannah just needs to make it back with the ship and everyone else all in one piece, and then she and Luke can figure it out together. It won't be much longer, but she already knows it's going to feel like one of the longest flights she's ever been on.
And the truth is she isn't doing okay. This all beyond anything Hannah had prepared herself to handle - mostly because she'd went into the situation headfirst without taking time to think about any of it. She'd spent so many years accepting that their family was fractured, possibly beyond repair, and now there's a chance that things can come back together she doesn't know what to do other than grasp for all the shards and hold on tight.
"I'm not the right person for this, Luke." The threat of failure is starting to loom large and despite her desire to fix everything, Hannah's starting to feel the heavy doubt and fear that's made her run before. Only now there's no where to run except back to Luke. "Things are -" she sighs heavily. "I'll be okay when I'm back with you."
Despite everything, Jane manages a smile. Because no matter how angry or upset they get, she and Jon have always stuck together. She knows it's ridiculous to some people, especially with how visibly needy they are — enough to cause all those rumors about the Targaryen Twins having an incestuous relationship, since even while posing as siblings they can't keep their hands off each other — but she believes it's justified, after all that they've been through since that attack at the Academy.
"I love you, too," she echoes. "We shouldn't be long now." Thank the stars for hyperspace travel. Because if she has to be stuck with Ben in the ship for days, she might not be able to stop herself from committing murder.
After she signs off, she cozies up into the seat, deciding to slip into a hibernation trance until they arrive back at the Resistance base. She's not incredibly exhausted, but more than anything she doesn't want to be bothered. Knowing her mother, Hannah might attempt some reconciliatory talk and she's honestly not ready for that. This ship is too small.
—
This ship is too small.
Rey frowns at Ben for the comment. It's... loud. She can't quite place it, but it sounds like two thoughts instead of one, like there's a faint echo of the words he's just spoken. It's going to bother her now, but what's she supposed to do? It's not like she can ask him about it... can she?
"Do you know where we're going?" she asks instead. There's nothing they can do about the ship being small, either. Or that if they look out the viewscreens, there'd be nothing but starlines.
Finn gives her a look. Like he wants to answer her, tell her that they're headed to the Resistance base in D'Qar, but that he refuses to give that information willingly to Kylo Ren.
—
Not the right person? Luke actually chuckles at that. "Don't start selling yourself short now, hotshot," he teases lightly. Okay, so they might not know what to do now that Hannah's actually gone and done what she'd said she'd do — but what's most important is that she'd done it. She'd brought Ben, their son, back. And she'd technically brought Jane back, too. Nevermind the failures of the past or whatever else might happen in the fallout of this day. For the first time in years, their family would be together again...
But, yes, it's a terrifying thought. Even he is terrified. Not that he'd ever admit to it, or show it.
"We'll figure it out. Just... get yourself back here. You wouldn't want to miss the celebration." He won't be celebrating much, he knows, but it's a decisive victory and nearly everyone else left in the base is already beginning to get festive. He can already imagine the hero's welcome for Poe and his squadron, and it almost makes him groan. Pilots. "I still have the last bottle of that brandy you like so much."
There was a December? I feel like we're going from November straight into January... >.>
No matter how upset Jon might be for her leaving like she did, he'll always want her okay and smiling. So he's glad he can pull even just a small smile from her. She needs it, needs the distraction. He can feel it as sure as if she'd been in front of him and he could read her facial cues. And while he's still grumbly about it, there's less tension in him from her leaving now too.
"Good," he the last murmur to her before the comm goes quiet on his end too.
Gray eyes watch the men around him happy and celebrating already about the win as he comes back to now and the room instead of his conversation with Jane. There's a tight smile for some as they clap his arm as they pass on their way out to find some drinks and fun, but without Jane near him or talking to him his demeanor goes back to stoney and watching everyone around him. They're all going to be sore in the morning, and confused if Luke brings everyone in for a next phase meeting or debriefing.
Though that may wait a day or two. Jon can already figure that he'll have his hands full with Jane and Ben under the same roof once they get back. He's not moving from his position against the wall as his gaze turns to the general, not wanting to interfere with the conversation he looks to still be having, but also not wanting to go celebrate with the other men.
"The Resistance base," was the automatic answer from Ben, not even thinking on it. He had felt that - the echo of his words - and wondered if Jane realised there was still a faint echo of their old sibling bond still in existence. His gaze shifts to Finn, to the look of anger there.
Ah, he didn't trust him. Of course not. A mirthless smile appeared, still looking at the ex-Stormtrooper as he picked the location from his mind. They needed to teach people how to shield their minds better. He kept his gaze on Finn
"I think it's on D'Qar."
Point made, he glances over at Rey again. That look... he knows that look, and yet...
Hannah brightens a little, breaking into a smile. "I knew there was a reason I married you. " Okay, so there are a few reason but one of them is brandy and how he always has something she likes on hand for when she comes home. "I'll be there soon. Don't let anyone near my brandy." A pause, and she ends the call with an "I love you." They don't say it often but after the events of the day and... everything else, it's worth saying.
She heads back to the cockpit, content to hide out until they arrive back to the base.
we're traveling through hyperspace folks lol also warning for a little tros spoiler
It's an inside joke between them now, though saying the words makes a bittersweet ache flutter in Luke's chest. Stars, how long has it been since that day? For a moment he feels so much younger, remembering the look on Hannah's face when he'd first told her that he loved her. I know, she'd said in reply, because of course that's how she'd take something like that.
Dropping out of the line, he rests both palms on the surface of the console and exhales deeply. One step taken, so many more to go. But first things first: his family's coming home.
—
Jane's never been so excited to get planetside, already standing by the entry ramp even as Hannah's still easing the ship into the hangar bay. The nervous energy about her is hard to miss, at least for those of them with some affinity to the Force, enough to make Rey actually ask if she's alright and for Finn stare at her worriedly.
The ship's not even come to a complete stop when she punches the codes and unlocks the door, using a Force-assisted jump to get off. Had anyone else been piloting, she'd be fussing over like a mother hen, but it's Hannah on the controls and there's no one else more suited for the task than she who'd captained the ship before her.
She's not surprised to find Jon and Luke waiting for them, though she goes to her father first, hugging him tightly. They'd already had their moment of reunion when she and Jon first came to the base, but even that feels so long ago now.
"You're safe," Luke breathes.
"I told you I'd keep Mom safe for you." There's an attempt to give him that lopsided Solo grin, but it's drowned out by her unease, feeling Ben coming up behind her with the others and she... she just can't deal with that right now. "Sorry, Dad. Excuse me."
Then she shifts out of Luke's grasp and makes a beeline for Jon, because damn right she's going to distract him from trying to kill Ben by making out with him.
"Let's get out of here," she murmurs against his lips after a while of that, though it's probably been long enough to make anyone else watching uncomfortable.
—
Both Finn and Rey would agree that they've never had such a long ride in their life. Sitting there in the main hold with Kylo Ren, sensing all the tension and anxiety in the Force... it almost makes them want to just go back to the vicinity of Starkiller Base and deal with whatever else is left there.
And then there's the rest of the family making things weird and awkward. They'd thought that maybe Hannah or Jane would check up on them eventually, but neither did, the latter only reappearing after Hannah announced that they're approaching the base. There's definitely so much history that they can't even begin to fathom, so Rey decides to just leave them alone for a moment, and Finn follows her lead, keeping quiet despite already having a myriad of questions.
She only frowns all the more when Jane practically leaps out of the ship.
"Your sister's in a hurry," she comments to Ben, just to break the ice, although her words hang in the air awkwardly after that.
I had my friend give me the cliffnotes. So I am good in terms of spoilers for tros
Jon’s standing a little behind and to the side of Luke as he stands in the hanger waiting for them to get back. And he’s a matching him of energy waiting for her. If he didn’t have more patients and practice on jobs waiting for her like this, he’d be pacing as the ship comes in.
The way she practically leaps from the still moving ship only quirks his lips and there’s a soft chuckle for her as she greets Luke first.
The sight of Ben finally coming down to the greeting party has Jon’s hands fist at his side and his lightsaber shivers a little with the want to grab and flick it on. But then Jane’s in front of him and his arms slide around her to keep her close as his mouth happily meets hers for the kiss. She knows the best ways to distract him.
When she makes that suggestion he shifts to lift her off her feet so he can carry her off. It’s best to keep his hands busy or keep him from looking at Ben much. Because while he’s very distracted with her in his arms, and with her mouth against his, even just the feel of Ben’s presence has his energy shifting in a growly fashion. He’d easily be able to shift from her and attack if need be, but he doesn’t really wait for Hannah or Luke to say anything before he takes her at her word and starts them out to the room they’ve been staying in. “Gladly,” is murmured against her lips.
Ben had hated every single minute of the flight. It's hard being trapped on a ship when you can feel the hated others have for you filling the stale air that's circulating around and he was glad when they finally made planet side and could leave. He followed Finn and Rey down, being that while they didn't exactly like him, they at least tolerated his presence a bit more easily than the others.
Well, Finn didn't like him. He couldn't really get a read on Rey, which was ironic given how loudly she broadcast her emotions.
He met Jon's eyes just once, and there was almost the fleeting image of a smirk on his face. It died quickly, watching his sister fly into the man's arms and... Oh, come on! How long had those two been together? They're still making out like idiots.
"She's got someone waiting for her," was the very dry reply to Rey's comment. Ben doesn't want to add that he doesn't kid himself that anyone is waiting on him - Luke is there for Hannah.
Well, maybe guards to take him to his cell. Since no one seems to have gotten the truth from Leia.
Hannah hasn't even reached Luke and Jon before Jane makes her move to get away from everyone else as fast as possible. She doesn't blame her. Given what's shaping up to be a very uncomfortable family reunion -- Hannah would run off too, if she could. Unfortunately, she has to stick around and figure out what their once fractured family is going to do now that that they're all together again.
She greets her husband with a tight hug, lingering a moment to murmur into his ear: "I've never been so glad to see you." At least, not for a long time. Being rescued from Jabba's palace is far up on that list but she also couldn't see then. Whatever happens, they've got each other. That's what matters.
"Uh -" she gestures to the others and then back to Luke as a sloppy introduction. "General Luke Organa, Rey, and Finn." she nods to her son. "and we all know Ben."
What are they going to do with Ben? Not everyone will trust him (Jane already doesn't) and he hadn't been interested in anything she or Luke had to say earlier. Now that he's back at the base they have no choice but to protect him. The First Order isn't going to give him up without another fight.
"Anyone need a drink?"
the lovebirds are going off to their room now and will reappear for the brawl during dinner lmao
"Jane," Luke admonishes, albeit tiredly, frowning at the blatant display of affection. Stars, he doesn't recall him and Hannah being that forward, despite having been young and full of energy back in the days of the Rebellion. And Jane and Jon have been what, together since they were students at the Academy? He remembers Ben grumbling about a boy she'd taken a fancy to, and being introduced during one of their visits to the Temple... really, he doesn't oppose them being together; he just wishes they'd keep it down.
He does, however, catch Ben and the others out of the corner of his eyes, and something in him says that Jane might be putting on a show on purpose. His daughter's told him the gist of what happened in the years that they've been away — the worst of it being that Ben had killed Jon, and that she'd brought him back, or something. Not that she knows or understands how, only that she did.
He rolls his eyes some as the younger couple finally leaves, and Hannah catches it for sure as it's right about the time they greet each other in a tight hug. He inhales deeply, taking in his wife's presence both physical and in the Force, just thankful that they're all alive after what had definitely been a suicide mission. "I could get used to you wanting to see me," he says with a small smile, his arms tightening around her a little more before letting her go.
He nods at Rey; he's heard of her, the scavenger. Finn he's met sometime earlier thanks to Poe. "Welcome to the Resistance," he offers, once more serious, mostly because he doesn't know how else to be. Hannah did introduce him as the General.
Or maybe it's really because of the latest addition to Hannah's ragtag party. He's practically holding his breath when he turns to face Ben. Their son.
"Hello, Ben," he tries again. He looks like he's about to start forward to give the younger man a hug, but uncertainty can be read on his face and echoes through his presence in the Force. Ben had walked out of their comm conversation earlier, after all. What's to say he wouldn't, now?
Thankfully, Hannah breaks the ice by asking if anyone wants a drink, although Rey politely declines and Finn just shakes his head and Luke... "Maybe later. Let's first get all of you settled." Having something to do is good. It'll distract him from the awkwardness of what's supposed to be a joyous family reunion.
—
Jane could feel her father's disapproval in the Force, but she pays it no mind, letting Jon lift her off her feet and carry her inside. Hey, if he's holding her, he wouldn't be able to punch Ben or, worse, grab his saber to try to fight him. She'd felt him wanting to do it earlier, and even now, there's still traces of that anger and desire for retribution in their bond.
It's only once they're through the first door that she shifts to get back down, grabbing both his hands and tugging him into their room in what's clearly in record them. Then she all but pins him to the wall, the hydraulic door hissing shut to their left. "I'm here," she murmurs, resting her forehead against his. She guides his hands around her waist, hoping he'll keep them there. "I'm here," she repeats, closing her eyes. "I'm sorry, love."

“Gladly,” is murmured against her lips.
good if we're all good
Well, Finn didn't like him.
Since no one seems to have gotten the truth from Leia.
i do love a good spoiler
