(Star Ocean 3 x King of Bandits Jing) universe

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Toplevel your character.
2. Choose or RNG a prompt from the list below. Add starters, indicate prefs. Or not. It’s up to you.
3. Reply to others.
4. Lather, rise, repeat.
5. Have fun! Don’t worry too much about the setting or the universe-specific details. But if you do have questions, ask away here! ♥

PROMPTS:

1. COFFEE DATE ‣ You’re in Surferio. It’s like Venice, only more old-school. Very green. The houses are more like huts, and they’re connected by wooden bridges. And the city’s teeming with all sort of humanoids — a Featherfolk here, a Menodix there. Watch out for the Lousyds in the water!

One of the city’s newest attractions is a cozy little café, said to serve the best pumpkin and ginger pies. And potato donuts. If you’re lucky, the chef will be in; he’s said to be terribly cute, with his trademark red bandanna and black wings. If not, his wife will surely be around, or at least one of his two charming daughters.

2. BAR BRAWL ‣ Kirlsa is a sleepy little mining town. The action’s mostly contained in the large manor in the middle of the area, which is not only the Count’s home, but also the headquarters of the Storm Brigade, Airyglyph’s cavalry division.

Tonight, though, the town’s modest tavern is abuzz with activity. The soldiers are out to party, including their more notorious cousins from the Black Brigade, the heavy cavalry unit based at the nearby Training Facility. One can expect trouble sooner or later, however; the two divisions don’t exactly get along.

3. DRAGON DANCE ‣ Congratulations! You didn’t die from what was essentially a battle with an air dragon, so now you’re a member of the Dragon Brigade, Airyglyph’s elite military force. From this point onward you and the dragon are partners — go ahead, name him/her — and you will have all sorts of adventures! Fancy a scouting mission? Go randomly exploring? Or would you like a special assignment from the King himself?

4. MAGIC SCHOOL ‣ The queens of the rival kingdoms of Airyglyph and Aquaria have launched their special joint project, the Center for Runological Studies, a magic school situated in Aquaria’s capital city of Aquios. And you are among its first batch of lucky students!

Excited? You probably will be, if you’re from Aquaria. Runology is in your blood. You probably even know a spell or two by now. Nervous? If you’re from Airyglyph, you should be. This is new territory; Glyphians are soldiers, not sorcerers. But you must have talent, if you’ve made it here?

5. PRISON BREAK ‣ You’re in a high-security military facility. A state-of-the-art, very modern prison, reserved for the most dangerous of enemies of the Pangalactic Federation. You’re one of the prisoners, or one of the guards, or one of the infiltrators — either way, whoever you are, you’re inside when the breaking out happens. Sound the alarm!

6. UNDER SIEGE ‣ The enemy is at the gates! Greeton’s invasion of Airyglyph has begun, and the mech army is now arriving at the capital. Imagine giant robots, able to shoot fire out of their arms, climbing up a fortified city built on the face of a mountain. Airyglyph’s strategic location has protected the kingdom from being invaded in the past — but not today.

The city’s in chaos. The evacuation order has been given, but most of the kingdom’s forces have been deployed to ground zero several days ago, and have been subsequently annihilated. The remaining soldiers are doing the best they can, but it looks like all is lost; even the queen seems to have accepted that, as she watches impassively from the castle balcony.

7. MYSTERIOUS EGG ‣ What’s that? An egg? Why is there a name and a crown symbol on it? You take it home, and sometime later it hatches... into some sort of animal. Is it a bird? A cat? A dog?

Even stranger, you’ll soon be able to do tricks with your new friend. Latching on to some part of your body, you can then fire balls of energy and cause explosions. Where will this new power and partnership take you?

8. INFILTRATION MISSION ‣ The mech army has one weakness: a central computer coordinating and controlling its movements. Your mission is to infiltrate the kingdom of Greeton, find the computer and shut it down. It should be fairly easy, but... your team isn’t exactly in good shape. Not just physically; you don’t all get along, either.

9. ROYAL PARTY ‣ Welcome to Quentão, a shining white palace built atop a waterfall. You don’t remember how you got here, but here you are, in a nexus of worlds. The palace is not just exquisite, it’s stunningly magical. You won’t see any servants, but the place is squeaky clean. And it seems to be able to anticipate your needs. Tired? Oh, look, there’s a chair that wasn’t there before. Hungry? Go to the lavish dining hall and food will magically appear.

Even better, there seems to be a party going on! A pretty extravagant one, too. The main hall is bustling with activity, and just outside it is a fancy fountain with strangely mesmerizing rainbow-colored water. Huh.

10. HOLY HEIST ‣ So an important ancient relic just got stolen. Or is being stolen. Either way, it’s important, and you’re definitely going to lose it at some point, because it’s being taken by no less than the Bandit King. What are you going to do? Chase after the thief? Call the cops? Break down sobbing? Offer a sacrifice to the gods and pray that they smite him?

[One of the screens - not one of those showing footage, or the one on top of the keyboard Spinel's using - goes blank, only to receive the following text.]

I can handle that.

[But can doesn't mean easy; just because his creators haven't run a virus check in years doesn't mean the restrictions locking him down can come apart in a single struggle...]

Here

[And Spinel will receive one password.]

That will prevent anyone from getting into this room after you, or shutting off your power.

[At the very least, it will buy them time.]

[ Blue eyes widen at the turn of the events, and for a moment Khrista finds herself at a loss for words. This is a Federation base. The base commander is posing as a god and terrorizing the locals with his robot army, taking advantage of the fact that the rest of the planet’s as technologically advanced as medieval-era Earth.

Spinel, who’d openly gasped at the computer’s surprising intervention, reaches out to key in the password, but Khrista quickly grabs the other girl’s hand. ]

Why are you helping us?

[ It’s hard for her not to be suspicious. She’s been betrayed before. Plus it’s really not what she expected. You normally don’t sneak into your enemy’s HQ only to find out that their computer wants to help you. Sounds too good to be true. ]

Nobody should have to die this day.

The commander - who is not in charge of me, whatever he thinks - has no right to his power, or to treat people in this way.

[Unintentional rhyme FTW.]

Thank you.

[ Her voice is breaking a little there. She’d taken the mission expecting the worst — her death, her comrades’ death, the death of thousands. The only person she couldn’t bring herself to grieve in that manner is the man she loves, but who she’s sure would be standing first in line when the mechs attack the city. ]

But who are you? If you’re not with the Federation...

I could not think of what the heck the Federation would be calling him in this AU. |D

I-

[Now, how to handle this? Lying isn't an option, but just saying what he is doesn't feel... emphatic enough.

The first line is quickly deleted, replaced with this:]

I was never given a name.

[ Khrista squeezes Spinel’s hand before letting it go, her signal that it’s okay for the other girl to proceed and use the password that’s been provided. It might be a trap, but it might also be a way out of this mess.

She’s still not sure what’s going on. An AI gone rogue? It doesn’t sound too far off from what the Federation’s known to be able to do; an old friend, formerly affiliated with the Fed, could once hack a computer by just talking to it...

Her expression softens. ]

Then what do we call you?

/in which mun attempts to be clever, and her muse laughs

[I am not on the side of the Federation, and I am not a simple system. I would not want to be called something overly intimidating, or something born on false assumptions.

So any cases of 'the computer is your friend' are right out.]

REROUTE, then.

[Given context, it seems value-neutral enough. That, and it's being re-routed, so...]
