"Where's Aunt Leia?" Jane asks instead, clearly getting the hint that the warning about not asking referred to the porgs. Not that she's too concerned at the moment because the creatures are all over her like she's their mother and it's great, and, well, she's not going to be a hypocrite considering that she and Jon had arrived at the base with a hulking, talking white Loth-wolf. (Though she sasses anyone who calls Ghost a pet. How dare.)
She looks over to Hannah's direction for a moment, checking if Chewie's around because she has a feeling he would adore the screeching things.
"Didn't want to come," Ben sounded like he was barely keeping a lid on that anger. Oh, but that had been a miserable reunion and he never got an answer on why she hadn't just told people the plan. He tries to walk but the porgd are everywhere and he can't take a step without almost stepping on one.
It wasn’t that she was scared to leave the ship and face the Solo family after the terrible creatures that had stolen away had begun to wreak their particular brand of sqwalking chaos - it was just - well no it was precisely that. She tried to get as many of the birds as she could that remained on the ship sequestered into the cargo hold so they wouldn’t join their friends in terrorizing the people and machines waiting beyond the exit ramp.
A little rumpled and with her hair only slightly messy from her efforts Rey finally made her way down the ramp of the ship, her eyes darting quickly to Ben before she settled on Jane, giving the other woman a tentative smile and a little wave.
Ben had told her some of the things that had happened between him and the members of his family, and while Rey had been there to be an ear and a shoulder for him she was a bit nervous but no less curious to see everyone and get to know them.
"What do you mean, she didn't want to come?" Hannah shouts back from her Porg-free safe distance. Her curiosity wins out and she closes the distance between herself and the young adults.
She looks from Ben to Rey and back again. "Did she say anything? A message for us and Luke?" The annoyance is clear in her voice. She'd allowed Leia to take her children across the galaxy to be trained and Leia let her down and disappeared. Now, it seems, Leia's decided to continue that disappointment when the galaxy needs her. When her family needs her. "She should be here."
Hannah's build up to one of her rants is derailed as she shoos a Porg away from her, scolding the bird: "Don't even think about it. I don't like you."
okay so posting order is now ben ➝ rey ➝ hannah ➝ jane/luke ➝ jon
Jane catches Rey waving at her and she waves back, laughing as the porgs attempt to climb all over her, and even when one manages to get on top of her head. (Heck, she might have given him a gentle push in the Force so he can make the climb. Sshhh.) For a moment it's almost like there's no bad blood between brother and sister, no dark history that's torn the family apart—
Until she feels Ben's anger in the Force. It's not a dark flash, but it's there, emotion that's all too familiar, having practically grown up feeling it on a constant basis. And then Hannah's annoyed, too, which she takes out on one of the porgs, which in turn makes Jane frown at her mother.
"Mom." Because really. Then she reaches out with a hand, palm outstretched towards the little creature. "Come here. I like you." To nobody's surprise — perhaps except Rey — the porg complies, screeching happily towards Jane like she's the Pied Piper.
Making soothing noises to calm the porgs down, she waits for what else Ben has to say. There's a curious ping from Jon in their bond, probably because her brother returning to the base isn't exactly good news for them and yet she's happy, and she sends him impressions of the porgs so he doesn't completely get distracted and zone out of their meeting.
"I mean we asked her to come and she said no," Ben responded, trying not to roll his eyes in his mother's direction but it was an instinct that couldn't be squashed. After everything, after letting his family think he turned on them, Leia couldn't do the decent thing of coming with him to make it clear that no, this was her plan.
Anger was a baseline for him. It wasn't likely to ease any time soon. He glanced at Rey, and thought that, well maybe sometimes, that anger eased a bit. His attention went back to Hannah.
"The only message was it's time for the Jedi to end." His voice was dry, unimpressed.
Knowing she wasn’t at all in her element Rey hung back where she had been standing, her focus shifting between Ben and his mother’s exchange and Jane as she slowly worked her charms on the polrgs.
Rey’s eyes snapped back to Ben when he mentioned what Leia had to say about the Jedi, and her face darkened a bit. Ahch-To had been its own challenge - to say the very least. Still she said nothing, knowing for the moment she was definitely a fish out of water in this situation. Later, maybe she would ask Jane for help with corralling the rest of the porgs back onto the ship before anyone got anymore annoyed about their small army of stowaways.
Hannah grumbles something that might be an apology about her attitude towards the porgs (but certainly not an apology to the porgs). Leia's message is cryptic at best, and her brow sets into a furrow of confusion and frustration. She can get over the disappointment of not seeing her long time friend (eventually) but Leia's words mean something much more for all of them and she watches the other women to see how they react.
Ben's just lucky she'd decided to ignore that eye roll.
"She can't mean that." Hannah shakes her head. "She's being dramatic." ...isn't she? Whatever she actually means, it can't be a positive thing. Not now, not when the galaxy needs something to pull it back from tipping into true chaos.
Hannah glances between Jane and Rey. "What do you think?"
Jane would be more than glad to help Rey later with the porgs. Or whatever help the other girl might need, really. She's never really had a lot of friends — she's infamous for cutting off someone's arm in lightsaber practice, and while it hadn't been on purpose, teenagers can be cruel and hurtful and alienating when they want to be.
But all that, porgs included, is forgotten the moment she hears Ben deliver their aunt's message: it's time for the Jedi to end.
It's... she doesn't know what to think. Or feel. Because she's spent so much of her life, years even, believing in the Jedi, learning about the Jedi, becoming a Jedi. Sure, she'd been in the habit of questioning and occasionally disagreeing with Leia's teachings, but that didn't mean she gave up on the ideal or what the Jedi represented. Why else did she and Jon still have lightsabers despite having left their old lives behind, if not because that's who they are?
The porg on her head, probably sensing that she's upset, makes a mournful screeching sound that interrupts the moment. But she supposes it's better that way.
Fooling no one, but pretending everything's fine anyway, she says with a cheeky grin, "Guess it's time to send Dad to nag her."
"I heard that." Luke appears by the hangar door, and though Jane knows who's following in his wake, she still looks over anyway.
Meanwhile, the General moves to stand beside his wife, frowning at... several things. The porgs, for starters. Jane's comment. The look on Hannah's face, because he knows that look. Ben and Rey having returned without Leia. The fact that Jon's right behind him and the last time he and Ben were in the same room, well. "Even Artoo couldn't convince her?"
The ping about the porgs had really intrigued him even if sensing Ben returning hadn't been the greatest news. He can't help his feelings toward Jane's brother though, not after everything that had happened since the night at the academy. He moves easily through the hangar door after Luke, making a beeline to Jane without needing to see where she is to know where in the room she's standing.
Though the look on his features is an arched brow as he's watching the porg on her head with curiosity. The impression of them in the Force is one thing, but seeing them in person is entirely different. And they're cute enough that he already knows Jane is going to want to adopt them all. They're not the only tiny life he can sense in the hangar though, and there's the quietest question to Jane through their bond about that other ping of life that's definitely far more human. He doesn't actually want to say anything about it, it's not his place especially if the people who created the tiny life haven't figured it out yet.
His arms wrap around Jane's waist as he settles at her back, though one hand raises to try and gently pet the porg on her head. "Are our guests here to stay though?" He has to ask about the tiny army, right? "Or are they being sent back with Luke when he goes to nag her?" Because hey, Jane started it? And he's holding onto that cheekiness from her in order to not settle into a broody nature right now. There are more important things on the table than glowering at her brother. Not that he's looked in Ben's direction at all. There is a small nod and slight smile to Rey in greeting though.
He's not surprised that Jon doesn't even look his way. Ben's never going to be his favourite person and quite frankly Jon's never going to be Ben's favourite person. Too much had passed, the best anyone could hope for beyond this was maybe civility. Maybe.
So he just ignored Jon, looking over at Luke instead. "Nothing Artoo tried helped," he said. "He's a bit down about that," the droid had sequestered himself away all the return journey, not pleased about not being able to bring Leia back. "She wouldn't listen to me, just kept locking herself away." He shook his head. "I think we," he gestured over at Rey, "made more progress with the rain than we did with Leia."
He glanced over at Hannah and shrugged. "I don't think she's being dramatic, she means it. The Jedi are to end." That flash of anger sparked again in the Force, for those who could sense it. How dare she do this - she sent him to the Dark to complete and mission and apparently decided that the Jedi were to end while his family thought he had betrayed them all.
The anger was enough to make it feel as if he had turned properly. But no, he was himself. He had always been himself. He took a deep breath, and looked at Rey, glancing at the porgs and then at her.
"How many of these things actually hid away in the ship?"
Rey watches while Hannah seems to process what Leia had said , the grim message about the fate of the Jedi that had hit her like a ton of stone as well. She had gone to Leia with hope in her heart, only to have to dashed against the rocks and it pained Rey to see anyone else going through what she knew was a far greater disappointment than her own. “I don’t know what I think honestly,” she said, frowning at Hannah. “It’s like she’s closed herself off from who she is,” trailing off Rey shook her head with a frown. Rey could almost have excused Leia’s behavior had it been only to her, a stranger - but to close off family too, especially after all Ben had undergone was much too much for the scavenger to tolerate.
Looking towards Jane and the porg on her head Rey can’t help but feel her mood lighten again, wincing at the horrible squawking sound before she catches Jon’s eye. The anger between Ben and Jon wasn’t yet a story Rey had been told fully, though the tension between the two men is unmissable, still she meets Jon’s eye and smiles slightly in greeting before the porg demands her focus once more.
Rey turned to Ben with a wince as he asked about the porgs. Not counting the ones that had managed to get loose there were still quite a few in the ship’s hold. “Too many, I think I need to round them all up and find a nice field somewhere they can live.” They certainly weren’t going to stay here after all. ,
"A far away field," Hannah agrees. It's an attempt to keep the mood light, though she knows everyone else can tell she's not feeling so light about how everything has unfolded. They needed Leia's help. Without it... they're up against a lot. And that's if the in-fighting doesn't kill them all first.
But. Both her children and Jon have been in the same space for at least five minutes without a fist fight, and she'll count that as progress.
"So we move on to plan B." Or maybe it's plan C by now. "Which does not include Luke going anywhere," she adds with a grin. "We don't have time for that kind of battle. Or any other family squabbles." She gestures to Jon and Rey. "That includes you two."
One of the porgs gets brave, hopping away from Jane to inspect Luke and Hannah. She does her best to ignore it.
Luke gives Hannah a look — as though to say what plan B? — because he'd been so sure that his sister would join them in the base. After all, Ben's supposed defection had been Leia's plan, plus Jane and Jon were alive and back with them. Add in Rey and the Resistance suddenly had four new Force users, and they could definitely use the Jedi Master's wisdom and training, especially after what had allegedly gone down at the Academy. But, no, all she had to say on the matter was that the Jedi had to end.
He would go there and drag his twin back himself; Jane might've been joking, but she'd been right. Although Hannah was also right, that they didn't have the time for that. They'd survived Starkiller, but the intel they've gathered as of late seem to imply that there's something more sinister out there. More planet killers, perhaps? Or another player that's about to enter the field?
Then he gives the porg a look too. Really, have they forgotten this is a military base? "Plan B, then. Over dinner." He turns to Hannah. "We'll need Chewie, too." He sweeps a glance at the children — yes, children — and his expression softens when he reaches Rey. He'd had half a mind to call her out about bringing in the porgs, but... she seems to be struggling with something far more complicated than stray animals. "Mess hall in five. Don't bring... those things."
Meanwhile, Jane's gotten herself comfortably nestled in Jon's arms, leaning back against his chest, and the porg on her head practically flops on her belly when Jon starts petting her. (Yes, Jane's absolutely sure it's a her.) But though she's paying attention to the conversation around her, Jon's curious ping in their bond moments ago has her gaze flitting to Rey every so often. Because now that he's pointed it out... she is sensing a tiny flicker of human life in the vicinity. Practically where Rey's standing. She almost laughs as Luke's dismissing them, fortunately managing to hold in it enough for her not to actually make a sound, though the moment the huddle's over and Luke leaves, she turns around to face Jon, and so suddenly that the porg screeches as she falls from Jane's head.
She catches the porg easily — with the Force, the tiny creature coming to a halt in mid-air before she scoops her up and holds her in her arms like she's hugging a stuffed toy. Unlike what they'd been originally taught in the Academy, over the years she's become more liberal in her use of her powers, at least when she's sure that no one cares or is actually looking. "You think so too?" she asks Jon, brown eyes wide with excitement and with a big, stupid grin on her face. As if she's the one who's pregnant. Yes, pregnant! Holy kriff, Rey is pregnant. And surely there's no other father but—
She glances back at Ben, before looking up at Jon again. "Seven hells," she murmurs with a soft laugh, giddy despite the news they'd received about Leia.
There's a very strong 'screw that' to the Jedi coming to an end feeling from Jon, and he doesn't bother containing it to just Jane for those Force-sensitive. He doesn't agree with them ending. It's not like you can just wash your hands of an ability that you have. More will eventually creep up, he's sure, given time and the lack of being hunted. And what then? The powers were hard to learn on your own, dangerous even if not careful. There would always be a need to train the next generation once this war was settled. But it's also kind of a discussion to deal with later since right now with this war it's all Force-users on deck to help where they can.
The porg enjoying being pet just brings the softest smile to Jon's features, using it to focus on instead of having to pay too much attention to Ben. Though his head tilts slightly at Hannah's comment about the family squabbles to let her know that he heard her. In his opinion, it's fine so long as the two don't have to talk to each other directly. Working together though, that's going to take a lot more time and a few barriers between them. Having Jane and the porg for distraction is helping though.
A small quirk lifts Jon's lips slightly in a smile as he watches Jane settle the porg safely in her arms. Both have become more adept and easy about their use of the Force since their days at the Academy. It came from life on the run and the bounty hunting jobs they'd taken on. He nods as his eyes flicker to Rey for half a second before focusing back on Jane. "Yeah, I think so too." He places a soft kiss to her forehead before he shifts to walk her out of the hanger. His eyes flicker down to the prog in her arms. "Are we keeping that one and should we show it to our room and its new home before mandatory family dinner?"
Because yes, he has to ask. Despite the rest being sent to live happily in a field, he's pretty sure there's no parting that one from Jane unless it absolutely wants to be with its friends. Through their bond, he offers Jane the sense that he doesn't think either are aware of that news and to calm down because she's going to draw attention from them.
Ben gave a vague look over to Luke, and shrugged. "Yeah, fine, over dinner," he said, his voice still clipped and closed off when talking to his Dad. Great, so if he won't go and convince Aunt Leia to come back, then is anyone ever going to believe him when he says he didn't turn? No, probably not was the answer to that and he hated it. He hated that no one would believe it.
The anger pulsed from him again, and he squashed it down.
"Going to try to corrall these things into a storage space," he said, looking down at the porgs. How many even got on the ship. He snorted at Hannah's suggestion, though, wondering if 'far away field' was some kind of code for what she'd really like to do to the flightless winged rats. As he was mentally referring to them.
His gaze flicked over to Rey once again, shooting her a small smile, once that was hidden away quickly. He owed her, a lot, and she needed to know that anger wasn't directed at her, never about that. "Mind giving a hand with... this?" He gestured over the porgs.
"Are you keeping that one?" Ben checked with Jane. "So we know?"
Hannah’s attempt at humor rendered a little smirk from Rey who’s mood was still soured from the chaos the shrieking porgs were causing in the hangar. She had wanted to try and make a good impression on Ben’s family - he hadn’t told her everything - the rift between Jon and he unmistakably but still shrouded in mystery for the former scavenger. She knew it was important to Ben to be accepted again, and she wanted to do what she could to help - the screaming mess certainly didn’t help.
Certain she caught sight of Jane and Jon glancing over at her Rey at least once, and somewhat concerned as to what’s gotten their attention the young fledgling Jedi turns her focus instead towards Ben when he speaks, nodding. “Let’s get them out of here before they break anything.” The idea of pissing off the Skywalker-Solo clan is very unappealing, whatever their issues with one another might be.
Glad to be given something to do Rey flashes Ben a quick, almost shy smile before heading off to start corralling the porgs from one of the hangar’s far ends, her thoughts already diverted to somewhere they may have flown over on the way that would be make a suitable home for the wailing lot of them.
Given the choice between hanging back with the porgs (and the children...) and following her husband, Hannah chooses to follow Luke to somewhere with fewer birds. Will there be a fist fight in the 5 minutes they're separated? She'd like to say of course not, but Hannah knows better than to rule out any possibilities for chaos with her family.
She's glad that Ben and Rey are back but the whole situation leaves her concerned for Luke. Truthfully, she's concerned for all of them and what it might really mean for the Jedi to come to an end at such a delicate time in the galaxy. It's been a long time since they'd heard from Leia, but never seeing his sister again? That must be something of a blow.
Hannah waits until they have a little more privacy, and then slips her hand into his, softly bumping against him. "You okay? If we really need her, you can go. I'll, uh, supervise things here." She grins. Leaving her in charge is easily more stressful than coming up with plan B in the first place.
Jane lifts the porg up into the air as though she's playing with a toddler. "You want to stay with us, don't you?" she coos in a voice that's definitely meant to be some degree of babytalk, and you'd think she is pregnant because of the way she's suddenly acting. The porg screeches, and she laughs again, glancing at Jon. "She says yes. Do you think Ghost will mind?" Because now they'll be a party of four, with a cryptic, quiet Loth-wolf on one hand and a screeching porg on the other. Suddenly their room feels so much smaller.
Ben's question, though, has her turning around to face her brother, and she can't help grinning stupidly at him. It's not even for the porgs anymore. "Yeah, we're keeping her." She hesitates for the briefest of moments, her eyes darting towards Jon without really looking at him, before adding, "I can help, if you need me? I just have to get her settled inside." No need to keep the boys in the same room unless absolutely necessary.
Then she's off with Jon and their new baby porg, and the odds are they'll probably be a little late to the mandatory family dinner because... well, they already know why. Probably.
Meanwhile, Luke's walking beside Hannah in silence, his face long and hard but his eyes glistening with emotion. Leia... he can't believe she's out there, alone, and decidedly not coming back. He's worried about what that means for the Jedi, for the Resistance, but above all, he's worried about what that means for them. They're family, after all. His thoughts are interrupted, however, by the feel of his wife's hand slipping into his, and he turns to look at her, squeezing her fingers gently back. She has no idea how grateful he is to have her; she'll only be insufferable about it if he tells her.
"You, lead the Resistance?" He's also grateful this is how she chooses to deal with the situation, instead of letting him spiral into the shadows of his thoughts. He manages a small, teasing smile. "I'd like to see you try. And no calling me back if Dameron decides to lead a mutiny."
