Some habits are more difficult than others to break.

[ Speaking of habits. ]

If you insist. Brianna, then.
And likewise, you may call me Tenel Ka.
[ May. Only if she wants to. ]

Although the title suits you, you carry it a fair deal better than most.

My grandmother seems to be of the opinion that I am not Hapan enough, that I am too much like my mother.

There will always be people to say you aren't enough something or another, trust, I've been dealing with that much of my life.

And my grandmother would call her a witch. Appropriate, considering her lineage, but meant to be an insult nonetheless.
It is strange how family can sometimes bring out the worst in us.
[ Worst because sometimes, somehow, you just come to believe the things they say. ]
I am sorry to know that the galaxy has not been kinder to you.

Family is... very skilled at bringing out our worst, and striking us in ways no one else can.
[ There's so much she could say but none that she probably should so she leaves it at that, at least for now.
But that's interesting, that his mother was a witch. Brianna knows enough about Dathomir to know exactly what he means. ]
Nothing for you to be sorry for, certainly not your fault.
The burden of my own lineage.

Hapan families possess such skills in abundance, most especially the royal family.
When my grandmother ruled as Queen Mother, she had my uncle assassinated because she did not think him worthy of the crown. As well as my father’s former fiancee.
In cleverly disguised ploys, of course. One cannot be a Hapan and not know how to scheme and plot and manipulate.
And that is something I am not proud of.
[ The burden of his lineage. And it seems like he’s never had anyone to unburden it to before, if the way he’s opening up to her now is any indication. ]

So Brianna just... tries not to think about it too much. ]
Politics and royalty have a way of making people very cutthroat. Doubly so when combined.
When I was younger my mother tried to keep me out of politics, but it backfired in a way.
Sometimes I wonder if she regrets that effort.
We all have things we aren't proud of, but those things don't have to define us.
We are more than one element of ourselves.
And sometimes those things that seem negative, things like being able to scheme and plot and manipulate... sometimes being able to do those things keeps us alive.

Did you not really serve in the New Republic?
[ Look, TK doesn't know what to do with this surprising level of kinship, either. It makes him think of something, but... it's too early for that, isn't it? Granted, Brianna is more than qualified, with her Alderaanian roots and her obvious experience in politics...
So he tries not to think about it too much, either, and simply attempts to breach other topics. ]
And if I may ask, how is your sister?
Has she recovered from her illness?
no subject
I did not.
I served somewhere far stricter for a time.
But my mother and grandmother were both involved in politics so perhaps I inherited a fraction of their skill.
Of course you may ask.
She's doing much better, thank you.
Practically back to her old antics. It's good to see her healthy again.
