If he was to be completely truthful, Ben would admit that it was nice, having (Uncle) Chewie be on his side for this. The Wookie had always been someone that was steady and a good influence when he was younger - even with all Hannah had dragged him into. He gestures for the Wookie to continue forward, hand going for his saber.
”Guys, what the kriff is taking you so long?” Jane’s voice breaks through their comlinks. ”This place is gonna blow!”
The ship’s all prepped and ready to go, so why the delay? Yes, she can sense the approaching stormtroopers, but they don’t have to stick around for that. Unless—
She huffs in frustration, unstrapping herself from the pilot’s chair and rushing back out. “Mom!” Stopping beside Hannah, she draws out her saber from under her jacket. “You fly her. I’ll help Ben.”
She doesn’t even know why she’s doing this. Dammit.
Hannah's taken by surprise but they don't have time to argue about it. They've already missed their chance to just make a full-on run for it, and none of them should do something stupid like trying to hold off all the stormtroopers by themselves.
"Okay." she glances briefly to the others: Finn, Rey, and Chewie. "Come on They've got this handled."
She turns and hurries to the ship, stopping briefly to glance back at her children. There's just one more big hurdle and she can bring both her kids home. She has to trust them - both of them.
Hannah motions for Chewie to follow her to the cockpit, advising the two younger adults to make themselves useful while they wait for the moment they can take off.
Jane ignites her saber in turn, the blade a dark red hue thanks to the Qixoni crystal she'd used in her replacement of the Corusca gem that had shattered that night at the Temple. The memory of the attack tries to push itself forward in her mind, but she takes a deep breath to keep it down. Now's not the time to be thinking about that, least she get the urge to take things out on Ben instead.
"I'll take the left flank," she says, but she doesn't even wait for him to acknowledge her as she sprints towards the approaching troopers, deflecting their blaster fire easily. Left because Jon goes right, though of course she'll have to improvise now. Kriff, how long has it been since she'd fought alongside her brother?
Ben only mildly surprised to see the new colour of Jane's saber. He had been given reports, of course, but seeing it in person was something entirely different. He feels the stirrings of the memory of the night at the Temple, and does his best to supress the answering stirrings in his own mond. He needed to be thinking clearly.
And then rolls his eyes as Jane takes off to the approaching troopers. Shots are fired, and Ben is raising his hand and sending them off into harmless directions easily. He turns his saber, defending and not attacking, and moving to try to disable this foe.
The quicker this was done, the quicker they could leave. It was getting darker.
Jane’s not so careful or restrained, her style having shifted entirely since their days in the Academy. She’s more aggressive now, more ruthless, more accepting of their Sith legacy -- evidenced by the fact that she, almost thoughtlessly, swipes at a pair of approaching troopers with a bolt of Force lightning out of her free hand.
“Take off!” she yells into her comm at Hannah, deflecting a blaster shot with her saber before spinning on her heel and sprinting off to their ship. “Go, go, go!”
It’s getting darker, and there’s a thick sense of foreboding in the air. Somehow she knows they’re going to make it, but it’s going to be a close call; doesn’t mean she has to like it.
He's almost impressed by the ruthless side that Jane displays. Almost as he's been on the recieving end of Force Lightning once too often, and he'd rather not experience it again. Seeing Jane use it feels almost like a warning to him: this can be used against you.
He is behind Jane as they sprint to the ship, throwing an arm out to send all remaining troopers flying backwards.
"Hell no!' Hannah isn't going to distract her children by getting into an argument over the comm, but she's also not going to leave them behind. She has both of her children back and she'll fight to keep it that way.
Anxiety weighs heavy in the pit of her stomach as she waits for them to board, having done and triple checked everything except actually lifting off. It doesn't take the Force to pick up on the feeling of death breathing down their necks, a feeling that reminds her of running from the Empire all those years ago.
From the copilot seat, Chewy whines his distress over the situation.
"They'll be fine. We had plenty of close calls," Hannah says firmly, though it's as much to reassure herself as it is to reassure him.
Hannah's hand hovers over the controls to close the door the moment Jane and Ben set foot in the ship.
Jane uses the Force to boost herself up the landing ramp and through the door, still shouting at Hannah through the comm to take off. She looks over her shoulder for the briefest of moments, just to make sure Ben’s followed suit, before running through the ship and to the cockpit, deactivating her saber as she does so. “Take off, Mom! I’ll be at the guns!”
Because they’ll be chased and fired at for sure. And she doesn’t want to be anywhere near Ben any more than she has to.
Oh, he made it - just. Ben stumbles through the ship, deactivating his saber, and watching as his sister does her best to run far from him. The guns... where even are they anyway? He was still a decent enough shot, he could help.
But judging by the looks of suspision he was getting from FN-2187 and the girl, maybe that wasn't the best idea.
The ship's off the ground the moment Jane calls out to her, Hannah guiding them up and away as fast as she can.
"Come on girl, for old time's sake," she encourages the Blackfyre. There's nothing like a little life or death situation to really get your adrenaline going, but if she's completely honest it feels good to be in the seat of her favorite ship again. Hopefully they live long enough for her to really appreciate it.
She can't help but flash Jane a little grin. "Always hoped you'd be my copilot one day."
And then she flips on the ship comm. "The rest of you make yourselves useful."
a little posting order change from here? jane/luke ➝ ben ➝ hannah/chewie ➝ jon?
The guns are where they've always been — because at the end of the day, the Blackfyre is still the Falcon, just with a more emo darker paint job.
Hannah's comment makes Jane pause for a moment, though, and she has to grin in turn. "Me, too, Mom. I'll come back down when we're in the clear." Both as in clear from the enemy, and clear from... well, Ben.
She'll socialize with Finn and the new girl later. Right now it's up to the gunner's turret for her, and she exhales deeply when she gets there, slumping into the seat and holding up her hands in front of her. Hands that are definitely shaking. She'd thought she was ready to see her brother again, but she thought wrong.
She lets herself fall into the Force in the hopes of calming herself down, but there's really no calming down. Not with Finn's agitation and Rey's vibrant glow and most especially Ben's distinct signature. Not when she can feel Jon's simmering anger at her leaving without his knowledge.
She sends a quick message to her father, then concentrates on the guns. There's a sense of foreboding in the air, too.
—
D'Qar is a flurry of activity, but the General stands impossibly still, watching the unfolding battle over Starkiller. The shields have been disabled and Black Squadron's on their way to finish the job, but it's still a very risky plan. Poe's a skilled pilot, but he's no Leia Skywalker. Should he have sent Jane instead?
He glances at the message that comes in. Speaking of his daughter... they have Ben and are getting out of range. Good. That's all he's going to think about for now, because so much could still go wrong and he doesn't want any of that happening.
He turns to look over his shoulder at his son-in-law. That Jane's alive is still a little weird, let alone that she's married her longtime boyfriend while they've been on the run. She wasn't even out of her teens when Luke saw her last. "Jon. You should go." He's ordered a base-wide evacuation, in the event the Resistance's assault on Starkiller fails and the superweapon manages to fire on their planet. "Jane will never forgive me if anything happens to you."
Ben watches, lookng around the ship with that strong sense of nostalgia. This was the Falcon mark two, alright, and of course Jane would do that. That ship was home to them more than any of the planets they had spent time on. He had more memories of running around it than anywhere else.
That makes him realise that he knows exactly where the guns would be, and he does turn in that direction. Only to watch FN-2187 run in that direction himself.
If they weren't the First Order's number one enemies, they're sure to be be now. Everything's falling into place and Hannah keeps waiting for an explosion of fire behind them, but she knows that taking her son back is likely to anger them more than the destruction of their weapon.
The ship shudders as they take a hit. Hannah does her best to be an unpredictable target, weaving one direction and then the other. The ship's older than any of them but that doesn't worry Hannah. With all the modifications and a good pilot they can outrun anything.
She's tempted to loop back, giving them a good angle to take down the Resistance ships but she also knows it's smarter to get as far away as they can. Everything could still go terribly wrong.
He's been simmering silently since he found her gone, silent and mostly internally so only Jane really felt it. Outwardly, he's been stoic and focused, helping where he could with the evacuation and everything going on. He's good at falling in line when he has to, at following orders or directions in situations like this.
It takes a moment for Luke's comment to sink in though because despite being angry at her for leaving him after swearing they'd do this together, he can feel her being overwhelmed and it's natural instinct for him to slide through their bond and offer her that steadying presence. No matter where they were, he's always there for her when she needs him. He'll just chew her out when she's back, safe in his arms. There's the faintest tease of stubborn wife for her too, if only because the teasing is just how they roll in tense situations.
He frowns though, as the words register. "Not without you." While he's good at following orders, he also knows that this one thing is worth fighting for. "We're both needed when they get back." Because he's not falling and dying, but he's also not leaving Hannah to come home to losing her husband either. The whole point was to bring the family together, and that includes Luke. He moves a few steps closer, up next to Luke as he watches people move to evacuate. "I'm not leaving you behind."
Jane’s hands tighten around the guns’ controls, and she closes her eyes for a moment, reaching into the Force and across the galaxy for Jon, for the support she knows will be there despite his anger at her for running off. They’ve been fighting by each other’s side and keeping each other alive for so long for either of them to turn on the other, and especially not now.
Sorry, love, she offers, though she at least smiles a little at the teasing. She’ll let him chew her out when she’s back in the base, as soon as the coast is clear.
Her eyes snap open and she fires.
“Got your back, Mom!” she yells into her comlink. “Now show them who’s boss.”
--
Rey eyes Ben wearily, unsure of what to do herself. She’s a decent shot and a decent pilot, but both positions seem to already be occupied, leaving her alone with Kylo Ren in the Falcon’s hold.
“What can I do?” she asks, even as she keeps a distance from the man and looks as though she’s going to take off anytime.
--
Luke sighs at Jon’s stubbornness, though he’s honestly not surprised. It seems to be a requirement in their family, and it gets worse with every generation. “I suppose this is why Jane asked you to stay behind,” he mutters with a soft chuckle, unaware that his daughter hadn’t actually asked or said anything.
Into his comlink he says, “Give us some good news, Dameron.”
Then he glances at Jon again, coming to a decision. “My shuttle’s in the hangar.” He tosses a small access disk to the younger man. “I’ll join you in five.” If Black Squadron fails, Starkiller will be firing at D’Qar from across the galaxy. “I hope we don’t have to, but if we do, we’ll be cutting it close.” Hopefully Jon’s good enough a pilot to be flying alongside Jane.
Ben can feel his sister reaching out into the Force. He frowns, just briefly, to himself. Last he knew, she was still with Jon. He hadn't actually been able to keep up with as much as he would have wanted - looking into hsi family too much would have made it clear to Snoke that he wasn't as fully devoted to the cause as he was making himself appear. Was Jane reaching for Jon?
The last he'd seen Jon, well, that had been the fight at the Academy. This was not going to be a good re-meeting. He blinks slowly, looking up at the girl - Rey, he reminds himself - and shrugs.
"I think our job is to just sit down and be quiet," he snarks lightly. "Your friend took the other gunner position, and Jane's got the main. My Mother is piloting and unless we're in desperate need of someone to be patched up... We wait."
That's all the encouragement Hannah needs. They're not going to run without giving a good fight. The ship makes a hard turn and dives under the incoming First Order ships, giving Jane and Finn clear shots. "Make me proud!" she calls back through the comlink.
She's blissfully unaware of movements in the Force around her, the loud discomfort both of her children are feeling in the moment. It would be hard to miss the tension between Ben and... well, everyone else on the ship, but at least for the time being she can ignore it and focus on piloting. Once they're clear from trouble she'll handle the brewing emotional storm.
Hannah turns the ship around again, and flips the comlink back on. "Ready for another run?"
Chewie whines, calling Hannah reckless. She waves a hand for him to be quiet. "It was Jane's idea!"
He'd say he's sure he doesn't know what Luke means when it comes to stubbornness. Though then there's that comment about Jane asking him to stay behind and he doesn't say anything. Just slides through the bond to his wife with a soft Get back soon and safe for her. No matter where they are, or how she leaves him behind he'll always be there just a stretch of force away to support her as she needs it.
Catching the disk, he nods at Luke. "I'll have her prepped so soon as you step in we can take off." There's a look at Luke before he turns though. "Five minutes." The tone is almost an order. Almost. Because in five minutes, if Luke isn't back Jon may be back to drag his father-in-law into the shuttle to get them to safety.
He doesn't want to take any chances with himself, but he also won't leave her father behind.
Hannah gets a loud, bright laugh out of Jane -- though it might not be entirely surprising considering how much her daughter seems to have taken after her. Stubborn, loyal, a survivor through and through, a little bit reckless, but one hell of a pilot. “If I do the next run with my eyes closed, will that make you proud? You and Chewie wanna bet on that?”
It’s the sort of thing she and Jon do on jobs, actually. Try to outdo each other, occasionally make bets over daring maneuvers, argue and sass each other. Hannah would enjoy having them in her crew.
“Hey!” Another laugh. “Not my idea, I’m just going with the flow!” She grips the controls again, all the Force awkwardness forgotten for the time being. “You can rest easy, Finn. I got this.”
Soon, she sends back to Jon in their bond, settling into the Force as Hannah takes their ship around for another run through the enemy flank. As promised, she closes her eyes, easily able to pick out the targets around them with the Force--
Then the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end a second or two before Starkiller Base explodes.
“Holy kriff.” She looks out the viewscreen, laughing incredulously. “It worked. It actually worked!”
--
Rey looks like she’s about to say something, but the comm chatter makes her pause and raise an eyebrow, equal parts amused and confused by everything that’s going on. She’s heard all sorts of things about Hannah Solo, but--
“Your mother?” She’d seen some kind of confrontation back at Starkiller, but she hadn’t been privy to what had been discussed. She squints, trying to remember what else she’d caught when Ben had tried to read her mind; it hadn’t been terribly intrusive, strangely enough, and she’d actually expected more from the man they called Kylo Ren. “Didn’t she… lose both her children?”
The stories about the Solo-Organa family have been scattered in fragments, some even just gossip, but one hears all sorts of things in Jakku. Especially after some Outer Rim bounty hunter had bought off what was supposed to be the Millennium Falcon for an outrageous sum of money. “Are we… is this the Falcon?” she asks, awe in her voice. She has to know, okay?
--
“Thank you.” Luke nods at Jon, then he turns his attention back to the battle feeds, almost immediately absorbed by everything that’s going on elsewhere. He might really have to be dragged out of the base at this rate.
Amilyn’s amused voice breaks through Luke’s comm; he’d forgotten to mute the line. ”He seems like a good kid. Where’d you pick him up?”
He blinks, surprised both by the voice and the question. That’s right, Hannah had sprung up her little surprise on him, and he hadn’t actually been able to get to the introductions before they were all on the move again. “Jane. She…” He shakes his head. Not enough time to explain. “Later. Get everyone out of here. I’ve not heard from Poe, so we might--”
Then a loud victorious whoop echoes through Resistance’s comm frequency.
Ben picks up on the word being passed through the Force, and frowns just slightly. Who is Jane talking to? Is she still with Jon or is that message being passed over to their father? He paused, glancing back over at Rey.
"...Depends on how you look at it. Technically she did," he shrugged, "But at the same time, we're both still here." He sighed and then looked upwards, as if inspecting the ship itself.
There's cheering from the cockpit, Hannah unable to hold back the rush of excitement or the grin spreading across her face. "That's my girl." a pause, and then for Finn's benefit she adds - "You too, kid."
Starkiller Base is gone. They're all going to be okay. Any of the enemy ships that remain would be smart to turn and run. The war isn't over but the battle is. How many times has she narrowly escaped from a situation where she should have gotten herself or someone else killed? There were some good years when she was doing more racing and transporting than she was running - and she even thought Luke might step back from a life of non-stop politics. Then everything changed and Luke found himself leading a rebellion all over again. It was hard to know what to do with herself then.
She sinks into her seat, letting the relief wash over her. She can't wait to get back to Luke, to let him see Ben, to get a small break, no matter how brief it is. Then it all start to feel real. Normal, though... she thinks they're still a long way out from that. If she's honest there will probably never be a normal for any of them.
Hannah steadies the ship and glances to Chewie. "You got this? I'm gonna check on on the kids."
--
Hannah finds Rey and Ben, taking a moment to study him. She's wondered his entire life if she's a good mother. She never had good role models and hadn't imagined herself as a parent. Babies don't wait for you to be ready and Ben wasn't an exception. Maybe if she'd been softer with him, or if she'd just been a different person he would have turned out differently. She tried. That's all she can do now.
"You two okay?" she grins at both of them as she approaches, reaching out to pull Ben into a hug.
[ ooc: okay so what if Ben only projected an illusion ala Luke in TLJ when he fought Jane and Jon in the academy, so they only think he killed Jon? because Jane’s a dumb idiot who wouldn’t let her brother leave otherwise and might very likely get herself killed in the process lol. anyway he’s supposed to be the strongest in the Force among all of them, so. ]
Jane slumps back against the gunner’s chair, smiling to herself. That part’s over, at least. Starkiller Base would no longer pose a threat to the rest of the galaxy. More than that, her mother’s gotten what she wanted out of this little mission.
Not that Jane feels the same way. She doesn’t know what to think, let alone feel, about having Ben with them, now and later on in the Resistance base. Ben who less than an hour ago was still Kylo Ren the Jedi Killer, who’d betrayed his family and his friends, who’d led the First Order to the Jedi temple that fateful night six years ago, who’d killed—
She’s honestly still not sure what exactly happened. There’s a part of that night that’s a blur, as though a dark haze had descended upon her mind. All she remembers with certainty is that Ben had killed Jon, striking him through the heart with her lightsaber before destroying it and leaving her in the fire. And then she woke up in a medical facility in the Outer Rim covered in burn scars.
She pulls out her comlink from the inside of her jacket, connecting to Jon’s line. “Hey.” She swallows, her mouth dry despite the Resistance’s victory. Because she’s still answering to him for leaving him behind. “We’re done here. Heading back to base.”
—
Rey looks up when Ben does, inspecting the ship’s interior as well. It doesn’t look like the Falcon from the outside, though she supposes it’s part of their strategy, camouflage and all.
Her head turns at the sound of Hannah’s voice, and she can’t help but smile in return — the older woman’s grin is contagious. She starts to say something in response, because it would be rude not to ask, but mother pulls son into a hug and the sight... stills her. For so many reasons.
She averts her gaze. “I— I’ll go check on Finn,” she says awkwardly. A part of her wants to stay and make sure Ben doesn’t do anything funny, because, come on, he was Kylo Ren. But... he’s having such a private moment with Hannah, and standing there, Rey feels like an intruder.
Jon doesn't get too far from Luke before everyone is celebrating, which means they don't have to slip out and can wait for their party to return. Which also means that Jon heads back toward Luke. There's a smile when some of the soldiers celebrate the victory and towrad Luke to let the older man know he won't be pushing Luke out of the base anymore.
Her voice on the line calms him a little as he leans back against the wall to watch people celebrate at the base. For the moment, the tension is broken and there will probably be a lot of partying tonight in celebration. "Hey," he answers into his com. There's the slightest growl to his voice for her, at odds with the slightly needing feel of him in the force around her. He doesn't know whether he wants to hug and kiss her when she gets back to base, or toss her over his shoulder and growl at her in private. Because with them, the growling will turn heated. It always does, and her parents don't need to see that.
"You okay?" It's the question he settles on for now, because her answer and how she's doing will dictate the greeting she gets. And just because they're done and heading back to base doesn't mean she's okay. He can feel some of her up and down emotions in their connection and even growly, his first need is her, to ensure she's okay. The tone in the question is tilted, because he doesn't just mean physically but emotionally too. He knows where they went, who they went for and who her parents wanted to bring home.

We wait."

A smile crawled over his face.
"Yeah, yeah it is."
